Extract Practice- April 24

In the Extract, "How is the representation of Gender Constructed", the director portrays the characters in a way that is very specific to their gender, to emphasize the difficulties faced by women in comparison to those faced by men. The director does this by showing the women in the extract, in difficult situations where a man is causing the problem, then he shows scenes in which men create their problems. The emphasis is on how the difficulties faced by the women are much more emotionally damaging, while the men cause problems because of their ego. This is all conveyed through the use of specific camera angles, movements, sound, and other elements of film that help develop the theme.
First off, in the beginning scene, two characters are shown in an argument. The dialogue seen
in this scene shows the man as oppressive, talking down to the female character who seems
very distraught. Additionally, close-ups of their faces are used to help make their contrasting
expressions clear to the viewer. Their expressions show that the man, trying to act superior,
has taken on a hostile tone while the woman seems defenseless by her worried expressions.
Then, as the scene ends a shot-reverse-shot is used to show the man walking away in anger
because he did not win the fight, while the woman appears to be in shock from the argument.
These details are important to the theme since they specifically emphasize their reactions and
the contrast between how they both deal with the situation.
Moreover, in the following scenes, the reactions of these characters are continued. First, a
scene containing a dialogue between the male character and another male colleague is shown.
In this scene, a two-shot is used to show their conversation in which the colleague tries to
convince the male character he needs to take action so the girl does not win. The importance
of the two-shot is how the male character's reluctance is shown as a reaction to his colleague
speaking. His reluctance to do more to hurt the girl and her reputation shows that he knows it is
wrong. Furthermore, another scene is shown where the girl is shown crying in the stairwell. A
high angle is used as a way to show her in an inferior way, contrasting the male character in the
previous scene. The female is distraught after the argument which is seen by her expression
through a close-up shot. The contrast between how each character reacts is significant to the
theme. Additionally, it is important to recognize their “costumes” in the show, since both
characters are dressed as doctors. This adds to the theme by showing that neither character
is superior to the other regarding their careers since both characters appear to be doctors. This
is also important to the theme since it portrays the ego of the male character.
Furthermore, another scene is shown where the same male character appears to be in an
argument with another male. The other character is defending his female friend, and he acts
protectively over her. The same male character from the beginning scene acts rudely, almost
ignoring the other man. The way he acts continues the development of his egotistical character.
Moreover, in the same scene, the man takes off in the same way he did to the other girl earlier,
shown in a shot-reverse-shot. In this same scene, a medium shot of a girl in a hospital bed is
shown, in reaction to the fight. She also appears to be distraught and acts in a worrying way. It
is seen in this scene that the way the female character acts is similar to how the female acted
in the previous scene, and the same man acts in the same way as well. However, the male
character's opinion seems to change in this scene. We can see this by a gradual zoom onto his
face as he appears to realize the error in how he acted, because of his ego.
Additionally, another scene appears after this with two men, and their dialogue between each
other. In this scene, the two men try to one-up each other by proving how tough they are and
then get into an argument trying to prove this. The viewer can see the argument build by how
with each shot-reverse-shot of their faces, both of their expressions become increasingly
frustrated after the other says something to one-up them. This is an example that adds to the
theme since the two men are creating a problem because of their egos. On the other hand, this
scene is contrasted by two young women shown in a medium-shot showing their dialogue, and
how they act in a happy, and respectful way. The reason for these scenes being back to back
is to show the contrast between the dialogue and acting of the male and female characters.
This adds to the theme by showing the difference between male and female friendships.
Overall, the theme the director tries to convey in this extract is how women and men act in
comparison to each other. Specifically, how women face issues from men, and men create
their issues from their egos. This is seen through the character development of the main male
character, and the scenes showing how both genders interact with each other. The theme is
further developed through the use of film elements like Mise-En-Scene, where acting and
costumes are important, and then CAMS, the specific camera movement to emphasize certain
expressions, is essential to the theme.

Audience and Institutions Essay

  1. Assess the importance of marketing in the media area you have studied. [50]
In the area of film, marketing has relative importance, but that is not to say it can make or
break a movie in terms of its success. The success of a film depends on many factors, one of
which is marketing strategies, but it is not the most important. However, marketing does play
a large role in how well known a film could be, and its popularity. To explain, many movies go
on to become much more successful than they would have been if they had been marketed
differently. Certain strategies like cross-promotion play a big role in how well known a movie
is; For instance, the popularity of Minions drastically increased because of how it was
advertised on many different platforms.
To elaborate, the Minion’s franchise stemmed from the success of its original movie-
Despicable Me. The production company NBC took the idea of Minions, and through specific
marketing strategies, created it into its own brand which led to a Minions movie. Minions were
marketed in many ways like the creation of merchandise like plush toys, cross-promotion
including TV advertisements with well-known companies, minions being used as McDonald's
kids' toys. It can easily be seen that all of this marketing paid off, since Minions went
on to gross over $1.5 billion, compared to Despicable Me 2 which grossed around $900
million. Moreover, through marketing strategies, NBC was able to take a specific
part/character of a movie and turn it into its own brand which went on to become more
successful than the original movie it was a part of.
Additionally, we can assess the importance of marketing in film through other movie’s
popularity along with how well they were marketed. For example, Guardians of the Galaxy
Vol. 2, grossed almost $900 million. The success of this movie could be because of the
marketing strategies used, or that it was a sequel so it already had a buzz, or even that Chris
Pratt was the main character. In cases like these, it is clear that marketing plays a large part in
the popularity of the movie since it was cross-promoted with many large companies like Lego,
Go-Gurt, Geico, etc., but that does not mean it is the reason for its success. This can be
proven through the fact that many movies may have through marketing strategies to create
buzz, but they still do not do well in theatres. For example, the movie UglyDolls was marketed
extensively: it was advertised in popular stores, during largely-watched TV events, and it even
promoted its characters on National Pancake Day. However, after all of this marketing, the
movie still did not succeed and was considered a flop based on its low earning, netting less
than $9 million. In this case, we can see a movie that was marketed properly but did not do
well in theatres. Based on these cases, it can be said that marketing is important to a movie's
success, but it is not the only contributing factor.
Moreover, some movies are successful only because of the content in the movie. Nowadays,
so many movies are streamed online, and that is the only way some people will watch a
movie. In instances like these, it could be said that marketing barely plays a role in the
popularity or success of a film. To explain, from what I can see, online streaming sites like,
Netflix, are the main source for many people to watch movies, meaning that going to a movie
theater is less popular. Therefore, some movies like ones released on Netflix would require
very little marketing. This is because it is already so accessible, most people will just watch a
movie because it's “free” and easy. Personally, I choose to watch a movie on Netflix by
browsing through the options, and then most of the time I end up choosing a movie I have
never heard of. For example, the movie, To All the Boys I Loved Before, turned out to be very
popular because of reasons completely separate to marketing. The movie was released on
Netflix and became so popular because viewers genuinely enjoyed the movie.
Overall, through the success of many blockbuster movies, we can see that marketing plays an
important role in film, but it is not the most important factor. This is proven through certain
movies that became so well known because of clever marketing strategies, and the high
income of movies like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 because of extensive cross-promotion.
However, we can see that marketing is not the only contributing factor because of movies like
UglyDolls that were marketed well, but turned out to be a flop. Lastly, to relate marketing in
films to current trends, it can also be seen that marketing has little relevance on certain types
of films released online through streaming websites like Netflix. For these reasons, marketing
is important to film, but other contributing factors are prevalent as well.

Editing Blog: Putting It All Together

Last week we edited the majority of our footage. We did all the editing on the iMovie. Then, we had to figure out a plan because only one person could edit at a time. So, we decided to do a group FaceTime while one of our group mates edited the footage, while we also did some finishing touches in class. We decided on iMovie because our project does not include a lot of special effects, and iMovie works well for simple editing. So, we had to combine all of our footage for our peer edit. We did this by importing all the footage from one of our group member’s phone onto his computer. This was done by plugging in his phone to the computer, and then dragging the footage into a folder. After this, he went onto iMovie and imported all the footage onto iMovie. On iMovie, he was able to crop certain scenes that had extra acting we did not need. Then, he had to do more specific editing to certain scenes to make the whole project seem more put together. On this, we argued and discussed on FaceTime. We discussed issues like lighting, and order of some scenes. Fortunately, we all had a similar idea of what we wanted it to look like because of the planning we did prior to filming. One thing we took a risk on was dimming the lighting of the forest scenes so it created a more ominous effect. We were unsure of doing this because we did not want it to look too dark to where it was difficult to see and then score badly because of it. However, after reviewing it multiple times we saw that it was still viewable and it created a better mood then the bright sunny lighting. This along with the last scene were our 2 main problems. The other problem was deciding whether to include the last scene or not since it did not entirely match the previous ones. This is because we used a different actor, hoping no one would notice. We decided to include this scene, and overall it turned out a success.

Editing Blog: Peer Reveiw

Today in class we did a Peer Review Assignment. This Peer Assignment was created so that students in the class could get advice on their projects so far. This was done by groups randomly selecting other groups to review their project, and commenting on it during class. We were given a paper with certain requirements on it and other specific questions. So, we were told to watch the film from another group and mark off the requirements it met on the paper. The paper consists of questions about lighting, sound, different camera angles/movements/shots, time requirements, and overall quality. It also includes two questions on the backside where we list one thing we really like about the film and one thing we don't like. The group we assigned did an overall good job. Their movie was about a love story, and one of the characters gets kidnapped. Our group liked this plot and enjoyed that it was easy to follow. However, unlike most groups, they actually went over the time limit. We included this in our suggestions to them because it is a simple fix. Then, while they did not have all of them, they included many different camera angles and movements. Another suggestion we included was to use darker lighting at the beginning where they show a funeral scene. In addition to this, we mentioned that some of the scenes were a little choppy when being cut together. However, we concluded that their project was almost complete and looks sufficient. Then, when it came to another group editing our project it was more difficult. This was because we had to do last-minute editing so we had to make the other group wait for a little longer. Then, they reviewed our project and we had issues with time requirements, but overall it was good feedback. Now, after having our project reviewed we will go back for reshoots to adjust it a little.

Filming Blog: Our Second Day Filming

Yesterday our group met up again and filmed after school. However, this time because it was a school night we decided to film a short scene. So, instead of filming the chasing scenes in the woods, we filmed the final scene in the bedroom. We went to one of our group mate's homes to film this scene. However, it did not go as well as we hoped since we encountered some difficulties. The first being it was bright and sunny outside, so it was hard to figure out the lighting on camera so it looked like it was nighttime. We tried to fix this issue by adjusting the blinds on the window and getting it just right to make the light outside appear to be moonlight. Then, once we got this problem taken care of we encountered another issue. This was the same one as last time, where our main character can not stay in character. We had faced this issue the last time we filmed, and figured it was just a one time thing and it was only our first time filming. However, it seems to be an ongoing problem where our actor can not stop laughing. This does not go well with a movie where the main character is supposed to be getting killed. So, after multiple takes of the varying room scenes, we did not have a lot completed. We then decided because we were all also so tired after a long day of school that it would be best to continue filming the next day. On another note, the scenes we were filming consisted of our main character arsing from her 'dream' in a state of panic. Then we would film a slow pan of the room, creating an eerie mood. We also had our character who acted as the chaser hide in the corner to slowly creep out when our victim had fallen back asleep. However, because of the difficulties mentioned earlier we filmed almost none of these plans for the scene. Therefore, we came up with a new plan to film the whole scene at a friend's house closer to school so it is easier for us all to meet. Hopefully, this time on our third try our main character will be able to stay in focus.

Filming Blog: First Day Takes

This weekend we finally started filming. We initially had difficulties choosing a date because one of group mates was very busy this weekend, but we worked around it. The solution was having to film without one of our group mates, but we decided this was better than nothing at all. Then, we also had issues with the location because each park we looked at was far from at least one of our houses. So, we ended up filming at Wolf Lake Park, which was the farthest for me. We began filming at 5:30 PM to get the lighting we wanted, and continued filming for 2 more hours. Unfortunately, we did not get as much footage as we would have liked but we plan on going back a few more times. When we arrived we had to walk a short distance to reach an area where there were fewer people, however we still had some issue with people walking in the area. Additionally, we all helped out in some way, and I helped out by filming the whole thing while my group mates acted. I would say I did a decent job filming but because I am not a professional, the camera would shake sometimes or I did not get the right angles. We had some other issues filming as well because one of my group mates, the main character, had a difficulties staying in character, and she would often smile or laugh during the scenes. This made it hard to film correctly since in scenes where a character is being chased to be murdered, they normally would be very serious and scared. So, this was difficult to work around, but I would help out as much as I could by maintaining a straight face as I filmed her. This definitely got in the way of our ability to film as much as we wanted, but we did all we could to fix the issue. Moreover, some scenes we had planned out were more difficult to film than we expected. For instance, in a scene where the main character had to trip on the ground, we had to retake it many times. This is because each take was either too much of an exaggerated fall, or it was not believable at all. For many scenes like these we had to shoot it over 10 times, which took very long. Additionally, it was difficult overall to get the exact angles we had pictured in our head when story boarding. Overall, we did not film as much as we wanted and got about 25 seconds of usable footage.

Filming Blog: Plan to Film

Since we have completed all of our planning requirements, it is now time for our group to film. So, today in class we discussed our plans to film. We talked about the location we will be filming at and the certain dates. We had difficulties when choosing the location since we all live very far apart. However, we knew we had to choose a place that seemed woodlike and included a lot of nature. We went over certain areas near each of our houses to find the perfect spot to film. We then decided on one that's not too far from everyone called Silver Lakes Nature Park. The park contains many trees,  trails, lakes, and also it is a very large park in general.
Additionally, we discussed the dates we will be filming. This was a difficult process since we have to work around 4 different schedules. While we would prefer to work on weekdays because of a teammate's schedule we are only able to film on weekends. This leaves us with only a small amount of dates to film since other teammates also have work obligations.  So we decided since we will do multiple days of filming we might have to compromise and on some days, not every teammate will come. However, we still decided on 3 dates we will plan to film on so we have somewhat of a schedule. Also, we decided to include ourselves as the main actors as to not complicate things further. This fits in with our difficult filming schedule as well, especially since we also need time for reshoots. Moreover,  although our school provides us with cameras to film with, we prefer to use our phones so it is easier to export and share. We went over this in our group multiple times because the camera does have some benefits but in the end we decided on using our phones. We also decided in class today who will be the main person filming and which phone to use so we avoid any arguments later on. Lastly, below is an attached image on the site we will be filming at, Silver Lakes Nature Park.

Planning Blog: Storyboard

In the past few days, we have worked on our storyboard. Our storyboard consists of 10 different papers, equaling 2 minutes of footage. We did our storyboard so we could turn our ideas and words into pictures to understand them better. This is helpful to our filming process because it is very beneficial to have a clear outline of what we will be doing so we can use our filming time more efficiently. However, we also came across some difficulties while story boarding. We realized that it is difficult to depict our ideas since all of us are not skilled drawers so it took longer than we hoped. We helped overcome this problem by taking turns while drawing, so one person did not get too tired. Additionally, to not over complicate things, instead of coloring our drawings, we shaded them with a pencil since color is not an important aspect of our film. We asked our teachers about this to assure that this was the correct way to storyboard, and they allowed us to do this since it would save time. Overall, the story board came out similar to what we expected it to look like, but unfortunately took a lot of time to complete.

Planning Blog: Health/Safety, Location, Participants, & Schedule

For this week of planning, we discussed certain elements that will be important when we film. Specifically, we went over health and safety, location, participants, our schedule, and title design.  When discussing Health and Safety, we thought it was important to discuss how we will navigate through a wooded area since it will most likely be at sundown when we film. Additionally, as I just mentioned we will be filming in an area that resembles the woods, most likely a large park nearby one of our houses. Then, for our participants, it will only be my group mates and I acting and producing the film. Lastly, since there are 4 people in our group, we decided it was best to have a loose schedule since there might be days where something unexpected comes up, but we are also hoping to only film twice at most (2 separate days).

Planning Blog: Titles

After planning which titles go where in our shooting script, we have now decided on the design of our titles. We decided on the font, point size, entering, and exiting of these titles. We used our previous title research, and examples from the film, “Split” to help us determine these details. We felt that it was best to try and go into depth to limit the amount of work and processing later in the project. Despite all of this thorough planning, we do expect some changes and bumps along the course of this project, and we have prepared for that by not making anything set and stone yet, leaving us with back-up options.

Planning Blog: Sound & Dialogue Script

Since we have prepared our final task we began to plan and make our scripts for the introduction of our two-minute movie beginning. In our script, we decided that we will be separating our opening sequence by scene and indicate exactly what the audience will be hearing in each scene. In the topic of sound, we covered every piece of it, from the Voiceovers to non-diegetic sounds that will be played through the course of the film. When writing our sound scripts for our film, we stressed the importance of it. Sound scripts allow us to plan and hear what the audience will be hearing, also, it lays down a foundation as to how the movie will move along with the sound alongside it. In the case that the sound script is ignored or isn’t prioritized, the quality of the film would greatly decrease as the movie will be lost. Since sound is the major accompaniment to film, these reasons are why it is so important to have a huge priority over them.

Planning Blog: Shooting Script

The shooting script blog is different from the sound script as the shooting script includes some if not all camera movements and angles. The reason that we included a shooting script is because it is a written form of the storyboard with the same amount of detail. Once again we broke down the film into multiple scenes and described briefly the action that the character is doing as well as the camera movement around that character. Without the shots script, film makers would have a much more difficult time shooting film because they have no plan. Also, as students we do not have film sets so we must film wherever we possibly could and not be able to shoot retakes as we are crunched for time.

Title Research: "Hostage"

How many titles are displayed during the opening sequences to the film?
There were about 29 titles in the introduction of the movie Hostage. The title of the movie (hostage) was in the middle of the titles rather than the end like I thought was a waste in suspense. The film has such a great title, and I feel it was wasted by putting it in the middle rather than the end.
What images are prioritized in opening sequence?
During the opening sequence, it was an animated showing of the city and how the city should appear in the movie. When the opening sequence ends it changes to a real actor screaming in a caged area.
What connotations do the images carry?
They show that struggle, distress, and ruggedness of the city. This lets the audience know what the rest of the movie is going to be like. This is important to draw in the targeted audience.
How is genre reinforced through symbolic and technical codes from the outset?
The genre of action is shown through the chaos of helicopters, guns, army men, etc. However, there is a slight showing of a thriller towards the end of the opening sequence, when they show a character screaming.
How does the film establish an enigma from the outset?
It shows signs of war and distress, leaving the audience with suspense, wondering why the city looks this way. This leaves them intrigued and continuing to watch the movie.
What strategies are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience?
The film is appealing towards what can only be assumed to be the male audience. This is because the film shows everything that a boy is told they should like, hence why this film would try to target them.
How has technology been used effectively?
Technology has been used through the use of editing animation. This leaves a lack of detail in the opening sequence, leaving the audience hanging with just enough information to have them intrigued. The last edit used at the end of the introduction really shows the transition from the intro to the core of the movie. This shows the audience a piece of what they will see throughout the rest of the movie.

Title Research: "The Notebook"

In the movie, The Notebook, there were 10 titles in the opening sequence of it. During the opening sequence I noticed that the most common images used were characters that are going to be in the film; these images carried a sense about the movie, kind of like giving the basis of the film. For example, the characters appear as ink blots on paper to symbolize the film being about a notebook of someone, this reinforced some background as well as fits the theme of the movie being a literal notebook. The outset used in the opening sequence creates mystery about the film by introducing it with soft music as well as the way the background is. The background seems to be a page with light writing in it indicating it being a notebook of some sort, but it does not answer who's notebook or its significance. Some strategies used to ensure that the film appeals to the target audiences are the slower transitions as well as placement of the characters. In the opening sequence the titles are written in normal print to capture the viewer as it being a person handwriting the titles in. Also, the transitions in the film play a large factor as they are slow fade outs of characters as well as titles that are replaced slowly. The images that come in also captivate the viewer as they are ink dots of characters to show it's being written in or made by a pen. The slow fade outs of the film are what really tie it together as it will present that the film will be more relaxed and not as tense as other thrillers. This goes for the angles as well being that the camera is held steady as POV in the beginning to show hands on the side holding a notebook, once the camera zooms into the pages the camera is held steady to make it clear that the notebook pages are the main focus.

Title Research: "Split"

How many titles are displayed during the opening sequences to the film?
There were 23 titles displayed in the opening sequence which included the starring actors, production company, casting agent, the editor, and more.

What images are prioritized in the opening sequence?
The opening sequence contained quick clips and images of the kidnapping situation that that takes place throughout the movie. The clips are scattered and quick as to not reveal too much about the film but still create a suspenseful introduction.

What connotations do the images carry?
The images create a feeling of suspense and fear through the fast unexpected cuts and the terrified expression on the young girls face. The images in the sequence also set the mood for the film by depicting a frightening kidnapping situation, which will clearly contain a lot of thrill and terror.

How is genre reinforced through symbolic and technical codes from the outset?
The genre is reinforced by through the symbolism of the frightening images. The images symbolize a situation that is supposed to seem intense and thrilling. These qualities match and reinforce the Thriller genre. Additionally, technical codes like the splitting of the screen into flashing boxes help portray the thriller genre as well.

How does the film establish an enigma from the outset?
The tiles and strange building briefly shown every few seconds establishes an enigma. It confuses but engages the reader as to what the images could mean and why they are significant. Additionally, the images of the girl also establish an an enigma since the audience would be confused as to why she is screaming.

What strategies are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience?
For this specific movie, I would say the target audience would be someone looking to enjoy an intense thriller, and could most likely endure violent or frightening scenes. So, the film appeals to this type of viewer by maintaining elements of the genre and insuring the film appears to be thrilling and frightening from the start. The title sequence conveys these moods by quickly cutting from the fast appearing titles to disturbing clips of the victim being kidnapped while also including intense but eerie music.

How has technology been used effectively? You want to consider camera angles, transitions, and editing techniques?
Technology has been used effectively through the use of color, and simple, but purposeful effects that align with the common elements of a Thriller. The use of color is seen by the absence of it, when I say this I mean how the film maintains a black and white color scheme that clearly depicts not only the seriousness of the film but also the intensity of a physiological thriller. Additionally, the effects used in the title sequence appear to be minimal but this only adds to the mood that is tying to be achieved. The effects are the flashing back from each title and the random but fast-moving appearances of phrases across the screen that almost indicate a theme of horror.

Title Research: "Seven"

For this project my group and I researched the opening titles of movies. I chose to do the movie se7en which is the same genre we chose of thriller. During the opening sequence 27 titles are displayed. They included the directors, producers, actors, and etc. from the movie. Throughout the 2 minutes of the opening scene there are many images shown to represent what the movie will be about. It mostly incorporates slides that can be interpreted as setting up or hiding a murder. The images make the movie seem very mysterious and frightening as it does not show the face of anyone but includes hair, razor blades, and pictures of potential victims. The images carry a very threatening, secretive connotation. As the images play out, it reveals more about the murders and persuades the audience to want to keep on watching.
Throughout the opening the theme of thriller is heavily carried out. The use of mysterious pictures, notebooks, and forensics helps to portray the thriller theme. As well as the pictures, the text titles help the genre to be carried out. The font and the effect of the glitch on the titles carry the theme even further as it makes the movie seem suspenseful and spooky. Enigma, which is an object or person that is mysterious, puzzling, or hard to understand is represented through the opening title sequence. The opening purposely includes objects that are interesting but confusing so that it leads the audience to keep watching. This was presented by crossing out a child's face and writing notes in a book. It doesn't fully show you the what he writes but you know it is important because of the continuous videos they show of it.
Strategies that I noticed are used to appeal to certain audiences are the ability to make the scene look very secretive and show that something horrible is about to happen. Technology has been used very effectively whether it pertains to the camera angels pr the editing techniques. By the images being all close ups it portrays that the movie is going to be a suspenseful movie because they won't tell you important details, like who the killer is which makes it very mysterious and appealing to the audience. The editing techniques depicted, also allow the audience to feel thrilled and scared by the transitions of the titles and the effects used, such as the glitch effect.

Title Research: www.artofthetitle.com

Since we have started our final task, we began with finding our genre as well as researching it for our final task; now we began researching the titles of movies in our genre. After researching websites, we found the website artofthetitle.com. In this website, it has an overwhelming amount of movies as well as series, however, this website focuses on the titles of movies. For example, you are able to click on a movie such as "Venom" and see the opening 10 minutes to see the titles that pop up and pertain to that movie, the same thing with the final 10 minutes of the movie. For our purposes we will be focusing on the movies that have titles within the first 10 minutes as it is more relevant to our final task project. Also, we will be researching movies and movies only as our final task is the first 2 minutes to a movie. On the website you can search the designers as well as studios involved in the title sequence that would pertain to your movie for further research in your film. Finally, on the website you are able to directly search the movie you would like to see the opening or closing. This allows for a more direct search for specific kinds of movies that someone may have previously thought of.

Title Research: www.watchthetitles.com

One of the websites that my group is using for title research is watchthetitles.com. This is a website that is used specifically for studying the art of title making. It has over 200 title sequences and interviews for researchers to choose from. Not only does it provide us with example opening sequences to show the titles, it also gives an explanation of why they were chosen. This website was launched in 2006. Making it the world's very first web page that is dedicated to title design. The website opens up to a slideshow of potential films you can research. Underneath this, is a choice of interviews you can use as research. Once you get past the interviews, it brings you to the six different research categories. These categories consist of: feature film, TV shows, Event titles, student projects, video games, and French Fridays. At the top of the screen is where you can find the words "Title Sequence", clicking on this brings you to the many opening sequences that my group will be able to use for our title research. This website offers TV shows, student films, and movies of a variety of genres, making it the perfect website for my group to use. Some of the films that you can research on this website are the Pink Panther, The Dreamers, Splice, Sky Fighters, etc. After clicking on the film you choose, it will show you their open sequence, insider information, information about the film, and it will allow you to leave a comment. After researching this website my group feels more confident about of title research process. We will now pick a film(s) off this website and use them for our research.
